El Calafate Travel Guide

Located in Patagonia, Argentina, Calafate is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in seeing nature in all its glory! The Los Glaciares National Park alone brings in thousands of tourists annually, all vying to see the awe-inspiring glaciers.

Although Calafate is now known as ‘the national capital of the glaciers,’ the town was originally used for sheltering wool traders. However, this all changed in 1937 when the Perito Moreno National Park was built. This brought about fantastic economic growth in the region, including the construction of road access. As a result, the population of the town grew significantly, with 6,410 people living in the area today.

As well as the glaciers, it is also worth checking out the flamingos! These beautiful creatures can be seen around the water of Lago Argentino; seeing these birds in their natural habitat is amazing, truly picturesque.

Calfate’s weather is mainly quite dry, with highs of 19º in the summer and -2º in the winter. To ensure you are able to experience every aspect of this beautiful town, it is best to visit the region in the summer; there is only 8 hours of sunlight in the winter.

Due to the town’s significance as a tourist destination, there are plenty of hotels in the area. So much in fact, that you might find yourself spoilt for choice! Most of the hotels have websites, so be sure to research them thoroughly to ensure you make the right selection; some are better located than others and some provide more activities (such as tours) for their visitors.

The glaciers inspire an overwhelming feeling of tranquillity, making you forget your everyday worries in the presence of their sublime beauty. So be sure to bring your camera to Calafate: the natural beauty of the area is truly unique!
